MR. TITO: What if Roman Reigns Won the WWE Universal Title at Wrestlemania 36 Instead of After SummerSlam 2020?

Welcome to a special edition column… In the past for my previous website, I wrote several “What If” columns relating to Pro Wrestling topics. As a kid during the 1990s, I was a big fan of the Marvel comic books entitled “What If” in which Marvel would display a different timeline should something entirely different scenario that occurred instead of what really happened. For example, what if Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four? What if Rick Jones became the Hulk instead of Bruce Banner? Things like that… Right now, Disney+ is actually running a “What if” cartoon series and it has been quite a successful venture for that streaming channel.
For my previous “What If” columns, you may have to dip into the Internet Archives for those as I believe that many of my archived columns no longer exist. Here are the previous What If topics that I covered:

I just want to take a little break from covering current events, though this What If would have major implications on current events.

WHAT IF… Roman Reigns wins the WWE Universal at Wrestlemania 36 instead of winning it after SummerSlam 2020?
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
Roman Reigns was still booked as WWE’s #1 babyface star and he was slated to wrestle in a “dream match” against Bill Goldberg at Wrestlemania 36 during 2020. However, a global pandemic known as COVID-19 hit and changed everything. During the Fall of 2018, Roman had to relinquish the WWE Title on RAW and take time off to fight Leukemia. With Roman being at risk due to a potentially impaired immune system to treat Leukemia, he was sent home during March 2020 after a wrestler appeared at a WWE show with symptoms. Without knowing the full extent of COVID-19, Roman was sent home as a precaution and Braun Strowman was actually inserted into the Wrestlemania 36 match with Bill Goldberg.
Braun pretty much destroyed Bill Goldberg to become WWE Universal Champion at Wrestlemania 36 in Roman’s place. For the Summer of 2020, Braun would enter into a feud with Bray Wyatt/the Fiend and it was quite a struggle to watch. Smackdown went from consistently being above 2 million viewers to beginning to consistently dip below 2 million viewers with Braun vs. Bray headlining the show. Thankfully, Roman Reigns made his surprising WWE return at SummerSlam 2020 and immediately afterward, he began associating with Paul Heyman to start turning heel. He bullied his cousin Jey Uso to complete the heel turn and the rest was history. Smackdown has consistently been above 2 million viewers and Roman is dominating the merchandise sales right now as a heel. He is above and beyond the WWE’s biggest star thanks to this character change.
What made it work was having 5 months off… This allowed fans to forget about how overexposed he was as a babyface and start to miss him. Furthermore, it gave time for WWE Creative to rethink his character and how they could present him. They could also plan for his return and that’s probably when they decided to roll the dice on the heel turn. Also, Roman had time to reflect at home about his career and where it could be headed upon return. It was really well done to help not only save Roman Reigns’s career, but to save the WWE as they were in desperate need of a top drawing star. They have been searching for the “next John Cena” for a while and tried forcing that with Roman from 2014-2020 as a babyface. Now, as a heel, the WWE finally found their star.
Roman Reigns continues to rule Smackdown and is headlining big shows against John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and reportedly the Rock in the future.

WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED – WHAT IF
Let’s assume that Roman Reigns does NOT get sent home and remains with the WWE through Wrestlemania 36. He was definitely penciled in to defeat Bill Goldberg to become the WWE Universal Champion. So Roman beats him and Bill Goldberg would likely go away for a while. Roman would continue as the babyface wrestler and be fed the usual suspects like Braun Strowman, AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, and Bray Wyatt. Problem is that Roman Reigns has defeated each of those wrestlers 100% cleanly before. WWE could try a trade of Bobby Lashley or Drew McIntyre, but again, he has beat those wrestlers 100% cleanly before.
Would the WWE be bold and have Roman Reigns turn heel as WWE Universal Champion after Wrestlemania 36? It would be like during 2012 when CM Punk was WWE Champion and the WWE turned him heel. I don’t know… Given how Vince McMahon wanted Roman to become the “next John Cena”, I just don’t believe that Roman would have been turned heel without the extensive 5 months off to rethink how he was being used. Besides, he was doing better as a babyface as many fans gave him sympathy for recovering from Leukemia and he was a bit better inside the ring than he previously was. He had experience now. Yet, his mic skills as a babyface were still so scripted and I believe that was mostly holding him back as a babyface. Thus, it could be assumed that if Roman Reigns remained as WWE Universal Champion during the Summer of 2020 in this WHAT IF scenario, Smackdown would also begin to trend below 2 million viewers just as it had for Braun vs. Bray.
HOWEVER – COVID-19 infections were ramping up and WWE performers were actually getting infected throughout the Summer of 2020. There’s a good chance that a COVID outbreak would hit the WWE locker rooms and cause Roman Reigns to be sent home during a later month and cause him to relinquish the WWE Universal Title. Thus, his time off and eventual return as a heel could have taken place at a LATER time rather than just before Wrestlemania 36 and returning at SummerSlam 2020. Because of his immune system concerns, him being forced to stay at home for a while could have been inevitable.

THE WILD CARD: Paul Heyman
If Roman Reigns wins the WWE Universal Title at Wrestlemania 36 and remains a babyface, what happens to Paul Heyman?
Timing was everything for Paul Heyman during 2020. Brock Lesnar’s LAST contracted appearance with the WWE was actually at Wrestlemania 36 against Drew McIntyre. Thus, Paul Heyman was free as a manager within the WWE. Then, Paul Heyman was demoted as Executive Director of the RAW Brand (or in charge of Creative for RAW) during June 2020. When Roman Reigns was set to return at SummerSlam 2020, Paul Heyman was fully available to join Roman as he was turning heel.
In this alternative timeline, who knows if Roman is even going to turn heel? Or if he does and it is at a later date, is Paul Heyman still available to join him?
During 2020, the WWE began performing massive job cuts as it appeared that they weren’t afraid of AEW as a competitor at the time. The “April 15” cuts were massive, as the WWE terminated contracts of wrestlers, NXT trainers, production staff, and office staff. If WWE has nothing for Paul Heyman during the Summer or Fall of 2020, there’s a chance that Paul Heyman gets released from the WWE. WWE saw Heyman up close and personal as Executive Director and may have the attitude of not being afraid of his Creative work elsewhere if he joined AEW or Impact.
That or the WWE sees the sagging numbers of WWE Smackdown along with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) signing CM Punk and thus opts to sign Brock Lesnar to a whole new deal for 2020. Heyman would rejoin Brock Lesnar and we’d probably see another babyface Roman vs. heel Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2020. Though that could be a great match-up, we’ve seen it before and Roman already dispatched of Lesnar during 2018, just 2 years prior.
If Roman remains the babyface World Champion, it’s WWE “business as usual” and Smackdown dipping under 2 million permanently could have caused issues with the WWE and FOX. Reportedly, FOX has been nitpicking at Smackdown’s numbers on Friday Nights WITH a heel Roman Reigns as the top guy. Imagine if Smackdown became permanently under 2 million or maybe worse in this alternative storyline with Roman remaining as a babyface? Yikes…
The Roman Reigns heel turn that actually happened after SummerSlam 2020 not only saved Roman’s career, but Paul Heyman’s as well. Without Brock Lesnar, he had nobody to manage and he had backstage heat from his tenure as Executive Director. Joining Roman gave Paul Heyman a “new lease on life” in the WWE and now his value within the WWE has never been higher. Heyman is now front & center within the HEEL Roman vs. BABYFACE Brock Lesnar storyline and this storyline is crushing it for the Smackdown brand right now.
But imagine this scenario in this timeline… Roman Reigns is struggling as a babyface WWE Universal Champion following Wrestlemania 36. He’s doing the same old things as a babyface and it’s just not working. WWE re-signs Brock Lesnar to a deal and to be a part of SummerSlam 2020 and Paul Heyman is Lesnar’s manager once again. WHAT IF the heel turn and the joining of Paul Heyman happens during this match? Heyman turns on Brock and allows Roman Reigns to defeat Brock Lesnar. Then, we’re perfectly aligned with the current timeline with Roman Reigns going on to become the great heel that we know today with Paul Heyman by his side. Heyman turning on Brock would be equally as shocking as Roman Reigns coming back after a 5 month hiatus.
The wildcard is and has always been Paul Heyman.

CONCLUSION
In my opinion, the 5 months off for Roman Reigns allowed everyone to press the RESET button regarding Roman’s career in the WWE. By taking time off, Roman was no longer overexposed and it allowed him some needed time off to reflect on the business. With 5 months off, it gave WWE Creative and Vince McMahon more time to think about how to present the Roman Reigns character upon his eventual return. Thus, they could hold more meetings and probably have conversations with Roman about the possible heel turn. Paul Heyman just happened to be free to join Roman Reigns with Lesnar leaving the WWE during 2020 and Heyman losing his Executive Director position.
Had Roman not been sent home during March 2020, he would have defeated Bill Goldberg for the WWE Universal Title at Wrestlemania 36 and then probably rule the Smackdown brand for the rest of 2020 as a babyface. Roman would probably go on to wrestle and easily defeat the same old names that he’s beat before such as Braun Strowman, Bray Wyatt, AJ Styles, and Daniel Bryan. Maybe Brock Lesnar signs a new contract later during 2020 and that is how Paul Heyman returns? Hell, maybe Paul Heyman then turns on Brock Lesnar to turn Roman Reigns heel then? That could have happened…
But I believe that the COVID-19 pandemic could have sent Roman Reigns home at a later date instead of March 2020. Thus, the same idea to turn him heel upon his return could have happened anyway but at a later date instead. But would Paul Heyman be available to join him, doing something else, or would Paul be unemployed by then?

This Roman Reigns HEEL turn saved Roman Reigns’s career, saved Paul Heyman’s career, saved the Smackdown brand from further ratings declines, vindicated Vince McMahon for pushing Roman, and finally gave the WWE a top drawing superstar that they’ve lacked since John Cena stopped being full time since 2015. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many things, but it may have created an opportunity to change how the WWE pushed and presented Roman Reigns simply by giving him time off. Amazing what serious planning can do. Imagine if many other struggling wrestlers had that too.
