CM Punk explains why he won’t bring back “This Fire Burns” as his WWE theme song

In a video published to GQ’s YouTube channel, CM Punk responded to questions about himself from around the internet. Here are a few highlights…

Question: “Hey, CM Punk, can you bring back your old theme song, ‘This Fire Burns?'”

Punk: “No, I can’t, and I’m gonna tell you why, even though it’s none of your business. ‘Cult of Personality’ is iconic. ‘This Fire Burns’ also iconic. But come on, we’re talking about Living Color, Vernon Reid. That song’s been with me since 1989 when it came out. And I was on the Little League team, The Indians. I knew it was time to make ‘Cult Of Personality’ my official theme song in WWE when I was renegotiating my contract and I knew how much Vince McMahon hated to pay for licensed music. And I said, ‘Guess what, pal? The only way I’m resigning is if I get this song.’ I thought he was gonna say no and I was gonna peace out and go on vacation. And he said yes, and well, now here I am.”

Question: “I wonder who CM Punk’s dream tag partner would be?”

Punk: “Living, dead, little bit of both? For wrestling-related things, my dream tag partner, we’ll go living but not active, Bret Hart. We’ll go deceased and inactive, Dominik Mysterio. He has perished in a plane crash. RIP.”

Question: “Who taught CM Punk to cut a promo? He’s so good.”

Punk: “Thank you. I think a lot of it, I was born with. A lot of it I learned from watching the great wordsmiths of our business. Roddy Piper, Paul Heyman, Jim Cornette, people who had a way with words. And I’ve always just had that chip on my shoulder and a mouth. So a lot of it I was indeed born with.”
