What WWE reportedly had planned for Mustafa Ali before he was released from the company

Last month, multiple WWE superstars were released from the company following Endeavor’s acquisition including Mustafa Ali. Ali had been advertised for a North American title opportunity against Dominik Mysterio at the 2023 NXT No Mercy PLE.

WWE NXT officials were said to have been frustrated about Ali’s release and it’s believed that tentative creative plans had been made for him into early 2024. According to Fightful Select, Ali was set to win the North American title before he was let go from WWE. Fightful noted the following…

“Dominik Mysterio was always slated to retain the NXT North American Title over Dragon Lee on the September 25 episode of WWE Raw, but sources with knowledge of the situation told us that the original creative called for Mustafa Ali to cost Dragon Lee the match. This would have played off of Ali’s teases to appear on WWE Raw. After that, a triple threat match for the title would have been set for NXT No Mercy where Mustafa Ali would win the North American title.”
