As previously noted, Samoa Joe relinquished the WWE NXT title just two days before the beginning of the NXT 2.0 era.
Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted the following regarding the situation…
“Samoa Joe is not expected out of action for an extended period of time but there’s no word yet as to when he’ll be back. We are told the decision to strip him was not a creative one but what was stated, WWE medical made the call, so the decision was made to strip Joe and crown a new champion tonight.”
It’s unknown if Joe will make an appearance on tonight’s premiere of NXT 2.0. Pete Dunne, Tommaso Ciampa, LA Knight, and Kyle O’Reilly will compete on tonight’s show for the vacant title.
