What happened during Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther with Sami Zayn as the referee on WWE SmackDown
The June 19th edition of WWE SmackDown opened with Cody Rhodes defending the WWE Championship against Gunther. Sami Zayn served as the special guest referee for the match.
Early in the match, Zayn pulled Cody away from the corner, allowing Gunther to land a cheap-shot big boot. Cody later mounted a comeback with a Cutter, but Gunther regained control and applied a Figure Four. After Cody escaped the hold, Gunther became frustrated with Zayn and told him to “do your job.”
Cody countered a powerbomb attempt into Cross Rhodes, but Gunther got his foot under the bottom rope and Zayn spotted it. Cody then got into Zayn’s face, leading to a heated exchange. Zayn shoved Cody, causing him to fall into a sleeper hold from Gunther. Cody eventually reached the ropes, and Zayn pulled Gunther away when he refused to break the hold.
Gunther responded by shoving Zayn, who slapped him in return. Gunther then powerbombed Zayn before Cody hit a Super Cutter, followed by a second one. A replacement referee ran to the ring, but Gunther kicked out of the pin attempt.
Gunther later hit a powerbomb on Cody, but Zayn pulled the second referee out of the ring before a count could be completed. As the match continued, Cody went for the pin on Gunther and Zayn delivered a fast-count to give Cody the victory.
