Former WWE star Tammy “Sunny” Sytch attempting to overturn her 2023 conviction
WWE Hall of Famer Tammy “Sunny” Sytch was charged with numerous crimes from her March 2022 car accident including DUI manslaughter in connection with the death of 75-year old Julian L. Lasseter. Florida State Attorney RJ Larizza declared Sytch to be “a danger to society.” Sytch ended up being sentenced to 17 years in prison with 8 years of probation.
It was first reported by PWInsider.com that Sytch is attempting to overturn her 2023 conviction by arguing that her original defense attorney provided ineffective representation. She claims her attorney failed to investigate Lasseter’s pre-existing medical conditions, toxicology results, and possible alternative causes of death that could have raised questions about whether the car accident legally caused his death.
She is also questioning a potential conflict of interest because lead prosecutor Ashley Terwilliger was married to Zachary Terwilliger, the physician who declared Lasseter dead. Sytch argues that this relationship and the overlooked medical evidence should have been investigated before her conviction.
Sytch is asking the court to review the evidence, hold an evidentiary hearing, appoint new counsel if necessary, and ultimately overturn her conviction and grant her a new trial. However, a judge dismissed her motion on October 21st because it failed to meet basic filing requirements.
The judge also warned that overturning her original plea agreement could expose her to a sentence of up to 26 years, compared to her current one. She can appeal the dismissal or withdraw her claims and keep her current sentence.
