Greg Oliver of slamwrestling.net is reporting that former WWE referee and road agent Dave Hebner passed away today at at his home in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Hebner was said to have died from an undisclosed illness at the age of 73 after battling Parkinson’s Disease in recent years.
Hebner was the twin brother of Earl Hebner. The Hebner twins were known for an angle on the February 5th 1988 edition of The Main Event where Hulk Hogan lost the WWE title to Andre The Giant in controversial fashion. Ted DiBiase used a “fake” Dave Hebner to screw Hogan out of the title and then the real Hebner showed up to confront the imposter.
Hebner was the referee for other noteworthy WWE matches including Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3 and Hogan vs. Savage at Wrestlemania 5. After being a referee, Hebner worked as a road agent for WWE until he was released in 2005.
