News regarding the internal reaction to Sami Zayn becoming WWE Champion
As seen during the 2026 WWE Night of Champions PLE, Sami Zayn defeated Cody Rhodes and Gunther to win the WWE title for the first time in his career. According to WrestleVotes Radio, Zayn’s victory at Night of Champions was kept on a strict “need-to-know” basis across multiple WWE departments. As a result, while Zayn left Riyadh as champion, not everyone behind the scenes had been informed of the title change in advance.
It was said that as of July 1st, WWE’s marketing department had not yet received instructions to update the SummerSlam 2026 promotional artwork to reflect Zayn as champion.
The report adds that one WWE employee described the situation as “worrisome,” noting that a lack of advance notice for a major creative decision could make it more difficult for departments such as marketing to prepare if that level of secrecy becomes standard practice going forward. Despite the secrecy surrounding the title change, the backstage reaction to Zayn’s win was said to be overwhelmingly positive.
