Wrestle Review by Andy Sullivan: WrestleMania Backlash and more
Six matches make up WrestleMania Backlash Sunday. Only one of those matches is a championship match. Four of these are WrestleMania rematches, hence the name of the event. I can honestly say I am not interested in this event. I do think the vehicle should be to give Drew the win and make him the next challenger Reigns beats. Are they going to stretch Roman and Drew out to SummerSlam, though? That’s still a few months away. Anyway, let’s get to Backlash.
Bobby Lashley vs Omos. I don’t care. Honestly, I really don’t. I guess Omos wins because he has MVP in his corner now.
Happy Corbin vs Madcap Moss. I don’t care. are you sensing a trend here about this event? Moss did win the Andre battle royal so it would make sense for WWE to capitalize on that and have Moss go on a massive winning streak. We said the same after Woods won KOTR and they’ve abandoned that gimmick already. I expect them to stop mentioning Moss as Andre Battle Royal winner in a month or so. I do think Moss picks up the win here.
Edge vs AJ Styles. They’re making a big deal about Damien Priest being banned at ringside. I figure that means he’ll show up mid-match and help Edge win again. I do think they missed the boat. They should’ve made this a tag match with Balor being AJ’s partner against Edge and Priest. I assume that match will happen somewhere down the road. I think Edge beats Styles again, causing a two on one beatdown and Finn to the rescue.
Cody Rhodes had the element of surprise at Mania. Seth lost then and should lose again this weekend. Listen, if they’re going to give Cody a major push as was ballyhooed by social media (that could be wrong), he needs to beat Seth again. I think he will. Seth will go crazier. He’ll link of with crazy Becky and that’ll be a new storyline.
The Bloodline(Roman, Jimmy and Jey) vs Drew McIntyre and R-K-Bro. This was originally supposed to be a title unification match between the Uso’s and R-K-Bro. That got changed for whatever reason and Drew got thrown in the mix. I’m guessing the jury is still out on Roman’s next challenger and they’re trying out Drew to see how he works with Reigns. I had heard Orton was getting the next shot but that was back when it was still a tag unification match. If they really want Drew to be Roman’s next challenger, he needs to go over here. Obviously they won’t have Roman get pinned for the first time in many moons in a tag match. I’m thinking disqualification win for Drew and crew.
Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey in an “I Quit” match for the Raw women’s championship is the main event. This match should be different than their Mania encounter simply because there isn’t a Becky/Bianca match to overshadow it. I still think Charlotte goes over here but she shouldn’t-not if this is going to be anything of a feud. Maybe Ronda could win by disqualification setting up a third encounter. That’s Backlash. Let’s look at what else is going on.
WWE reportedly has plans for the draft to take place possibly in August (Summerslam is July 30). Could also be in September. September 3 is Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales.
Big E revealed his C-1 isn’t healing properly and he’ll be in a brace another 4-6 weeks(B/R).
Wednesday, Ricky Starks will defend his FTW title against AEW tag team champion Jungle Boy. Starks will win, leading to Starks and Hobbs getting a tag title shot at Double Or Nothing despite never having a match together. They could have a tag match, though. Plenty of time between now and May 29. Also Wednesday is the MJF/Wardlow contract signing, CM Punk vs John Silver. Toni Storm vs Jamie Hayter, Darby Allin vs Jeff Hardy and Adam Cole vs Dax Harwood in the Owen Tournament happen this week. Friday will see Scorpio Sky defend the TNT Championship against Frankie Kazarian and Ruby Soho vs Riho in an Owen qualifier.
I’ll end with something Scorpio Sky said that got a laugh out of me. He said “the TNT title will no longer be passed around like Tay Conti backstage”. Hillarious. Everyone have a great weekend and enjoy wrestling!
