Update on the rumors surrounding CM Punk potentially returning to either WWE or AEW
As previously noted, CM Punk reportedly wanted to make a WWE return but the company “turned him down” and he’s not expected to be back for now.
In regards to a claim that Punk was recently scheduled for a call with a few WWE board members, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted that the story is not accurate. Meltzer stated the following about Punk potentially returning to WWE…
“Those in creative have not been told of anything involving him and those who would normally be in the know about these things, including on the big surprises like Cody Rhodes stuff before anyone else, don’t know anything. That doesn’t mean he’s not coming, just the back stories regarding his coming aren’t accurate.”
There is also internet speculation about CM Punk possibly being the person wearing the “Devil” mask on AEW television. There were seemingly multiple references to Punk during the November 8th 2023 edition of Dynamite including the following…
* Anthony Bowns being thrown through glass (Jack Perry/Punk glass story)
* Kenny Omega referring to The Young Bucks as children (Punk said “I work with f*cking children” during AEW All Out 2022 post-show media scrum)
* MJF calling himself the “real” world champion (Punk said the same thing earlier this year)
In regards to the Punk/Devil speculation, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com wrote on Twitter/X that “it would be a gigantic work on everyone in the company if so, but I think it would also be an incredible reveal and story.”
