Results of John Cena vs. Randy Orton at WWE Backlash 2025
John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton for the WWE title took place at WWE Backlash 2025. Here are the highlights…
* The two engaged in a feeling-out process in the early moments as the St. Louis crowd chanted for Randy. Cena went for a handshake but poked Orton in the eye. Orton responded with his own eye poke, and Cena regrouped outside the ring. Cena tried to leave the ringside area but Orton went after him. There was a dueling “you can’t wrestle/yes he can” chant at Cena.

* Cena gained the advantage and delivered the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena and Orton simultaneously took each other out with an AA and an RKO. The two traded blows and Cena hit another AA, but Orton kicked out.

* Orton came back with an RKO out of nowhere, but Cena was able to roll away. Cena was able to counter Orton’s punt with another AA, but Orton kicked out.

* After the referee was accidentally knocked down, Cena hit another AA on Orton. Cena attempted to use his WWE title as a weapon, but Orton countered with another RKO. However, due to a delayed count by the referee, Cena kicked out. There was a “bullshit” chant from the crowd.
* Outside the ring, the referee was knocked down again after being inadvertently pushed into the steel steps. Orton then delivered an AA to Cena onto the announce table. Orton set up a table from under the ring and put Cena through it with another AA.

* Back in the ring, Orton took down Cena with another RKO, and a new referee ran to the ring, but Cena kicked out. Cena attempted to hit Orton with his title, but Orton dodged, and the referee was struck instead. Orton hit another RKO, but no one was available to make the count.

* General Manager Nick Aldis and other officials entered the ring to check on the referee. Orton delivered RKOs to Aldis and the officials. Orton attempted a punt, but R-Truth ran in to help Cena. Orton hit R-Truth with an RKO, but Cena capitalized with a low blow to Orton. Cena then struck Orton with the title, and a recovered referee counted Orton out.

* After the match, Cena said he needed competition and didn’t need the fans. The credits rolled and Cena left the ring as fans chanted “thank you Cena.”
