Results of Gunther vs. Sami Zayn at WWE Wrestlemania 40 Saturday

Gunther (c) vs. Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental title took place at WWE Wrestlemania 40 Saturday. Here are the highlights…

* Before the match, Zayn met with his wife and son. Zayn then spoke with Chad Gable. Zayn wanted Gable at ringside for his match but Gable declined and said Zayn was on his own. Gable said Zayn always had what it takes and said Zayn owes him a favor in the future. They shook hands and Zayn headed towards the Gorilla position. Before Zayn made his entrance, he ran into Kevin Owens and Owens motivated him.

* Zayn got in some early offense but then Gunther took control with a German suplex. Gunther delivered punishment as fans did a dueling chant for both men. Gunther chopped Zayn and Zayn fought back with chops of his own as Zayn’s wife watched at ringside.

* Zayn hit a tornado DDT and went for a Helluva kick but Gunther countered with a sleeper hold. Zayn escaped and went for the helluva kick again but was caught with a dropkick. Gunther hit Zayn with a powerbomb but Zayn kicked out.

* Gunther taunted Zayn’s wife and Zayn took advantage of the opening. Zayn was finally able to hit the Helluva kick but Gunther kicked out. Zayn went for another one but Gunther countered with a lariat. Gunther hit two powerbombs but Zayn kicked out again.

* Gunther continued to dominate Zayn as fans sang the “Ole” song. Gunther once again taunted Zayn’s wife at ringside. Gunther hit another powerbomb and laughed. Gunther went up to the top rope and hit a big splash to Zayn but didn’t go for a cover. Gunther delivered another top rope splash and kept taunting Zayn’s wife. Zayn got fired up and hit a helluva kick as Gunther climbed the top rope again. Zayn delivered a brainbuster to Gunther and then pinned Gunther after two more helluva kicks.

* Zayn kissed his wife after the match as he celebrated his victory. Gunther was IC champion for 666 days.
