News regarding Kevin Knight being booked for AEW World Title match against Kenny Omega
According to Fightful.com, several plans for the AEW Redemption PPV event were kept “close to the vest” until Wednesday’s Dynamite, when three championship matches were officially announced: Kenny Omega vs. TNT Champion Kevin Knight for the AEW World Championship, Kyle Fletcher vs. Bandido for the AEW International Championship, and Mark Davis vs. Andrade El Idolo for the AEW National Championship. AEW also announced that Chris Jericho will compete as his “Painmaker” persona against Tommaso Ciampa.
The report added that the decision to have the TNT Champion challenge for the AEW World Championship around this time of year has been planned for “quite some time.” Fightful also noted that Knight has been discussed internally for a significant push, including a World Title opportunity and future feuds with other top-level stars.
Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted the following about Knight being in the main event against Omega…
“This feels in name value like a television main event, but perhaps the company has so much goodwill that they can do okay because this does feel like a skippable event. But on the positive side, sometimes when making a new superstar you do have to sacrifice short-term for long-term, and even if Knight is likely losing (it would be insane for any other finish), at least he is in a PPV world title match which positions him bigger.”
