Memphis City Council renaming street near Treadwell Middle School after Jerry “The King” Lawler
According to commercialappeal.com, The Memphis, TN City Council has approved a plan to rename a quarter-mile stretch of Homer Street near Treadwell Middle School in honor of wrestling legend Jerry Lawler. The section of road between Given and Rhea avenues will become associated with Lawler following a unanimous vote during the council’s June 9th meeting. The measure was included on the consent agenda and passed without opposition. A date for the official street-renaming ceremony has not yet been announced.
Lawler, who is 76, became a prominent figure in the Memphis wrestling scene through his work in the Continental Wrestling Association and United States Wrestling Association from the 1970s through the 1990s. He is a member of both the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame and the WWE Hall of Fame.
Lawler has faced several health issues in recent years, suffering three strokes since 2018. In an interview with Action News 5 late last year, he said that his most recent stroke left him colorblind.
