The John Cena Classic said to be a “work in progress” from WWE

During the 2026 WWE Backlash PLE, John Cena announced the first-ever “John Cena Classic” — the best of today vs. the best of tomorrow. Cena confirmed that there will be a new event and a new championship. The fans will also determine the winner through a voting process.

In an update, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted the following…

“Regarding the details of the John Cena Invitational, we were just told today that this is a work in progress. They wanted to make the announcement but as far as what it is, that is not decided so any speculation of tournament vs. individual matches or how the champions will be set up is just speculation.”

Cena publicly addressed the risk of his John Cena Classic being a “total failure” in a post via Twitter/X. Cena stated that the event “may not be perfect by any means yet it’s authentically me (I am not perfect either) and reflects my values and beliefs.”
