While speaking to the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk commented on the fan reaction to former AEW star Powerhouse Hobbs being renamed Royce Keys in WWE…
“Wrestling fans are so interesting because they complain about everything. Powerhouse Hobbs—cool name, pretty dope, right? This is a new start. And I think Royce Keys is a pretty badass name. Everyone is immediately going to poo-poo it because they’re used to Hobbs. That’s the status quo.
People will always dislike new things, but then they’ll demand new things. ‘Oh, we need new talent.’ Okay, we give you new talent—then they sour on them.
I think Joe Hendry just won the NXT title and people are already like, ‘Well, this Joe Hendry title run is getting a little long in the tooth.’ It’s just like… sometimes—and I’m a wrestling fan too, so I’ll include myself so people don’t think I’m picking on them—but sometimes we’re our own worst enemies.”
