Update on the report of John Cena’s retirement match potentially being changed to a different date
Earlier this week, it was reported that John Cena’s retirement match could be going head-to-head with the AEW Worlds End PPV event. In an update on the story, the following was stated during WrestleVotes Radio…
“After asking around about the rumor dates for John Cena’s last match, we’re told NBC’s preferred choice is Saturday night, December 13.”
“December 27 remains an option, although unlikely, as NBC has already an NFL contractual obligation with an exclusive game on Peacock that night, and they’d rather not compete with themselves, according to a source, while 12/27 does line up with AEW World End pay-per-view, something WWE could and would like to counter. Sources doubt it will be chosen because of the NFL obligations on NBC’s part. As WCVB Boston reported back in May, the event is still expected at TD Garden in Boston, as the city would love to host Cena’s last match.” (quotes courtesy of WrestlingNews.co)

Andrew Baydala also addressed the situation…
“NBCU confirmed that it has the infrastructure to host multiple live events on Peacock, but stated that it typically does not compete within its organization and cannot confirm or deny anything at this current moment.
#WWE & The city of Boston are still negotiating, but it seems the original plan of 12/13 with two events surrounding that date was the preferred option months ago.
However, a venue contact at TD Garden informed me that the Celtics could host a game on December 12, which wouldn’t eliminate the 12/13 date. However, scheduling an event before 12/13 (#SmackDown on 12/12) would be too unpredictable at this moment.
It seems to me that 12/27 might just be it, considering the TD Garden is open on 12/25, 12/26, 12/27, & 12/28.
Here’s what they sent me-If Celtics advance to the NBA Cup Quarterfinal game as the visiting team and lose, or if the Celtics don’t advance to the NBA Cup Knockout Rounds at all, this ‘NBA Cup Week Game’ will be considered a standard regular season game played on Dec. 11, 12, 14, or 15, potentially at TD Garden.”
An update on John Cena's final match.
The discussion is still between the two dates, but it seems to be a one-horse race.
12/13 & 12/27.
NBCU has an NFL Saturday Night Primetime game scheduled for 12/27 that is a PEACOCK exclusive, with kickoff slated for 8:20 PM ET, currently… pic.twitter.com/4nZSMzVs1t
