Update on Cody Rhodes’ creative direction for WWE Wrestlemania 40 and when he might “finish the story”
As seen during the February 2nd 2024 edition of WWE Smackdown, Cody Rhodes seemingly stepped aside for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to face Roman Reigns at WWE Wrestlemania 40. The Vince McMahon sex trafficking lawsuit, WWE canceling creative plans for Brock Lesnar, and CM Punk getting injured were said to be factors in plans being changed.
Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted that at this point, the plan is for Cody to face world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins at Wrestlemania 40. Johnson also wrote the following in regards to when Cody might “finish the story” and win the title that his father Dusty never held…
“The reality is this: while the story was primed to climax at Wrestlemania 40, there were already some in the company openly talking about the idea of Cody winning the World Heavyweight Championship and then challenging the winner of Roman vs. Rock for Summerslam in a title unification bout so that Cody could finally, really, we promise this time, finish the story.”
As previously noted, fans have criticized the change on social media outlets. Fans have continued to be vocal on Twitter/X with “WE WANT CODY” becoming a trending topic on Saturday.
