Backstage news regarding CM Punk’s injury announcement on AEW Rampage
As previously noted, AEW world champion CM Punk announced during the June 3rd 2022 edition of AEW Rampage that he is injured and will need surgery. An interim AEW world champion will be crowned at the Forbidden Door PPV and will face Punk in a unification match once he is cleared to wrestle again.
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com, there is no definitive word yet on how long Punk will be out of action after his procedure is done. Johnson wrote the following…
“AEW was aware he hurt himself after the six man tag on Wednesday but didn’t get confirmation surgery would be required until Friday afternoon, a short time before last night’s broadcast.”
It was also reported by Johnson that the plan was never for Punk to relinquish the title. The working idea in AEW is to crown an interim champion if someone gets injured in similar fashion to what the UFC does.
Chris Jericho confirmed via Twitter that he misspoke on commentary when he said Punk relinquished the title.
I misspoke. He’s not relinquishing the title…he needs to get surgery which puts him on the shelf indefinitely. https://t.co/a3vDSm3Gqx
