Wrestle Review: AEW and Not So Extreme Rules

AEW Grand Slam brought us some new and exciting things. AEW might’ve accomplished the rare double-turn. Cody got booed heavily. Brandi returned and got booed. Malaki Black has been getting cheered increasingly as the weeks go on.

Remember when FTR left WWE and came to AEW? Everybody was all “oh, they’ll be treated better and used better than they were in WWE”. That’s actually the fans calling card for everyone they want away from WWE and in AEW. Well, FTR lost another one this week. Not that losing to Sting and Darby is akin to losing to scrubs-it isn’t. But weren’t they supposed to be AEW tag champs by now? When is the last time FTR won a big match? Ruby Soho vs Britt Baker as the main event of Dynamite was the right choice. Britt winning was also the right choice.

CM Punk began his Team Taz Gauntlet Friday against Will Hobbs. Will the endgame be him winning the FTW championship against Brian Cage? Or is the FTW title just window dressing? He’ll have matches I’m sure with the rest of Taz’ crew over the next few weeks. The main event saw a returning Homicide coming to the aid of Mox and Kingston as they were getting beaten down by Suzuki and Lance Archer. We also saw what looks to be a Dark Order and Jurassic Express union. We’ll see how this develops.

For me, AEW has been more exciting recently than WWE. WWE does have their, as I call it, Not So Extreme Rules event Sunday night. I remember when there were actually extreme rules matches at this show. From cage matches to no DQ matches, street fights to the old three stages of hell, it was a good time. These days….

Liv vs Carmella kicks off the card. I can only assume they’ll have Carmella win even though Liv is clearly over. Remember that week they had Sasha, Carmella and Zelina together as a group to help Sasha against Bianca? That crew lasted one night, didn’t it? *sigh*

Jimmy and Jey Uso will successfully defend the tag championships against The Street Profits. The Profits should finally regain the titles but we all know the Bloodline is hot. And surely WWE won’t mess with that. Right? Ha!

Jeff Hardy pinned Sheamus this past Monday to make Priest vs Sheamus a triple threat for the U.S. championship. Jeff got a win this past Monday that should give him momentum for this weekend. I think Priest retains, though.

The Raw women’s championship will be on the line when Charlotte successfully defends against Alexa Bliss, You don’t really think the golden child is losing to Alexa, do you?

Bianca Belair gets her rematch for the Smackdown women’s championship against Becky Lynch. I assume Becky retains and Bianca gets sidetracked, perhaps helping Liv in a feud with Carmella and Zelina Vega.

The foregone conclusion match wraps up the show. Roman Reigns will successfully defend the Universal Championship against Finn Balor. After the match, whether it’s seconds after or the following episode of Smackdown, Brock Lesnar will confront Roman and off we go on the road to Crown Jewel. Where, of course, Roman Reigns will defeat Brock Lesnar. Oops, did I spoil it? Enjoy the show!
