The Problem with Another AEW Tournament
Hello everyone, “The Renegade of Wrestling” back again with another serious conversation piece that needs to be had. This one for the company “across the street” as some fans put it. Tony Khan, and the folks at All Elite Wrestling.
Saturday on Collision, the TBS Championship situation was addressed. While on the surface, that is a good thing, the resulting decision, I BELIEVE, is not. So, in case you missed it, what they’re going to do is have a Tournament, where the winners get entered into a “Survival of the Fittest” Match on the July 1st Episode of Dynamite.
Here’s where I have a problem, AEW’s booking of the Women lately has been abysmal. A 72 second squash match on Dynamite? What happens if those women, TayJay, are unsuccessful in the Championship opportunity against Divine Dominion? What was the point in making them look so strong, just for them to lose when it matters?
On top of that, you have 2 more problems surrounding this announcement:
Problem 1, you already have 2 tournaments going on right now, the Men’s and Women’s Owen Hart Memorial Tournaments, which will culminate on June 28th at Forbidden Door, and Problem 2, in the week since the Owen began, you’ve had 5 tournament matches. 1 Women’s Quarterfinal, and all 4 Men’s Quarterfinals.
Furthermore, the next Women’s Owen Match that is to be had, is the one that features the mysterious “Wild Card” entrant? So we’re blowing that “huge surprise” with no build up. I can hear the sickos now, “but J.J., Persephone and Sareee are injured, so they can’t do those matches yet.”
Awesome! Glad you opened that can of worms, if we’re keeping things 100, they shouldn’t even be in the tournament! Not when women like Megan Bayne, Lena Kross, Lacey Layne, Deonna Purrazzo, Serena Deeb, and Thunder Rosa all exist on the roster. Hell, you even got Hikaru Shida, Kris Statlander, and if you’re feeling froggy, Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. that could be penned in the tournament!
So what you’re telling me, is that you’re “grand plan”, is that you’re going to add a third tournament to the mix, one that will culminate 3 days after the other 2? You’re telling me that in addition to having 6 more Women’s Owen Matches to hold, you’re going to also do a 6 Woman Survival of the Fittest Tournament?
Here, I have a better solution…
Instead of having a whole other tournament, make it so that the losers of the Owen, get entered into Survival of the Fittest.
“Now why would you reward a loser?”
Great question, sicko.
My logic is, the Owen is to determine the #1 Contender for the AEW Women’s WORLD Championship. The #1 prize for the women on the AEW roster to obtain.
The TBS Championship, is the secondary title. The title for those “not quite good enough” to make it to the World Title.
Plus, the math works perfectly. It’s an 8 woman tournament. That means there will be 7 losers. A Survival of the Fittest match, traditionally, is 6 people. So with the exception of the 2 women, who will battle in the finals of the Owen just 3 days prior, there will be 6 eliminated women by the June 27th Collision. There’s your field for Survival of the Fittest.
A perfectly logical conclusion for the problem, right there for the taking. It’s just too bad that Tony Khan can’t see the solution in front of his face.
What do you think NoDQ Galaxy, am I off my rocker? Or do I make a point. Let me know.
