WWE reportedly had plans for Randy Orton to defeat Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42
As seen during WWE WrestleMania 42 Saturday, Cody Rhodes defeated Randy Orton to retain the WWE championship. It has since been reported by Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com that the original outcome for WrestleMania Saturday was going to be Orton winning the WWE Title.
Meltzer stated the following during Wrestling Observer Radio…
“Randy was supposed to win. I know that the finish to Cody winning did not— there’s, you know, there’s a lot of chaos the morning of the show. So I asked about that. Did that finish change the morning of the show? And there are people who said yes, but someone who I would trust more than anyone said no. No, it was decided before yesterday morning.”
BodySlam+ also stated that Orton was originally slated to win the title but that plan was altered in the final weeks leading up to the event. It was added that since WWE intended to continue the feud between Cody and Orton after WrestleMania, they instead used a post-match angle to advance the storyline in that direction rather than going through with the title change.
