Will Opsreay: “I feel like a lot of this year I haven’t needed to be the five-star guy”
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, AEW World Champion Will Ospreay commented on the numerous five-star match ratings he has received from Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com. Here is what Ospreay had to say regarding feeling the pressure to deliver…
“I feel like a lot of this year I haven’t needed to be the five-star guy. I’ve needed to be kind of like a little bit of a storyteller guy, and then when it’s time for me to do, like, the five stars, I bust it out.
I think I got one with Swerve. I think that was the only one that I had until then. So, like, I came back and I already had a plethora of matches. I don’t angle my matches towards trying to get a five-star but I have an idea of what my version of a five-star match looks like.
It just depends on the story that we’ve told leading up to it. Because obviously there are matches that can easily get those—get the five.
The Dragon Gate match where it was the six-man tag where no one knew the story. It was this action, but because of that, it was mind-blowing at the time. We didn’t need the story behind it. The action was what a five-star match looks like.
But for me, the way I kind of map it out is I kind of feel like what the story needs for it. Like, how we take them. Like, if we did this, what are the crowd doing? And then if the crowd are doing this, all right, let’s swerve them this way.
And it’s honestly, it’s so hard for me to explain without completely ripping the curtain off.”
