What is being said regarding Malakai Black’s status with AEW

Last month, AEW President Tony Khan noted that Malakai Black has almost five years left on his contract and said that fans shouldn’t “expect him going anywhere anytime soon.”

On Thursday, there was a rumor floating around social media that Black asked for his release from his AEW deal but it was denied. Raj Giri (former owner of WrestlingInc.com) noted the following…

“I heard an AEW star requested their release, and follow up sources indicate it was Malakai Black. He reportedly has repeatedly shown concerns about his mental health due to personal life and demoralization due to the booking and handling of his character. I reached out to AEW for comment earlier today and will provide any updates should I receive anything.”

Fightful Select noted that “we heard that rumor within the AEW roster that Black had been unhappy, but the reason why wasn’t something we could report without confirming first-hand.” It was added that “AEW sources that we spoke to that had claimed Black wasn’t happy, also said that they believed things had been smoothed over to some degree.”

Black is scheduled to team up with Brody King and Buddy Matthews against Sting, Darby Allin, and Miro at the 2022 AEW All Out PPV.
