News regarding Vince McMahon reportedly changing the finish of a match at WWE Wrestlemania 39

Prior his departure from WWE, Vince McMahon was backstage at WrestleMania 39 in 2023 and was said to have been “heavily involved” with the post-Wrestlemania RAW. Fightful.com has since published new details regarding Vince’s creative influence at the time.

According to Fightful, the initial plan for WrestleMania had Finn Balor defeating Edge (now known as Cope) in a match featuring Balor’s “Demon” persona that would have concluded their storyline. Despite Edge advocating for Balor to win, Vince McMahon reportedly insisted on Cope emerging victorious. Sources from both creative and industry circles confirmed that Balor was originally slated to be victorious but McMahon overruled this decision. It remains unclear whether the wrestlers themselves were informed of the original plan or the subsequent change, as WWE typically communicates such updates on the day of the event.

There was widespread speculation that Vince was behind the decision to have Cody Rhodes lose to Roman Reigns. Although McMahon supported this outcome, sources indicate that it had been the intended direction for quite some time.

The following evening, McMahon allegedly implemented last-minute alterations to the RAW After Mania script. A source at the time likened McMahon’s involvement to the Tasmanian Devil, describing him as storming in, devouring the script, disrupting the show, and then departing.
