News regarding another ring name that WWE considered for Jeff Cobb instead of JC Mateo

As seen during the 2025 Backlash PLE, former NJPW star Jeff Cobb made his official debut for WWE. Cobb’s ring name was later changed to JC Mateo.

According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, it’s believed that WWE also considered the name JC Matanza as an insider reference. Cobb’s first major break in wrestling was at Matanza Cueto in the Lucha Underground promotion. However, Meltzer noted the following…

“While AAA was an investor in Lucha Underground they weren’t owners and in purchasing AAA, that wasn’t a purchase of Lucha Underground tapes or intellectual property. Plus Cobb was said to not like that name.”
