Matt Hardy reveals a pitched “Broken” storyline with brother Jeff that Vince McMahon “hated”

While speaking on his podcast, Matt Hardy commented on a “Broken” storyline with his brother Jeff that he pitched to Vince McMahon after returning to WWE in 2017…

“When Jeff and I had returned to WWE in 2017, we did our run as the Hardy Boys, and then Jeff got hurt. He needed shoulder surgery and was going to be out for five or six months. He had probably only been out for about a month when I started doing Broken Matt Hardy, aka Woken Matt Hardy, and I began my program with Bray Wyatt.

At that time, Vince asked if there were some supplemental things I could add in that would help Broken Matt Hardy. I said, ‘Well, I have this idea. Vince, have you ever watched the show Dexter?’

Vince goes, ‘Dexter? Uh, not familiar with it.’

So I explained: ‘Okay, well, Dexter’s dad was like his north star—his guiding light. Dexter’s dad would appear and give him advice, but really it was just Dexter internally thinking. He was like his conscience or soul. So, what if we do something similar? Broken Matt is here, in this dilemma, and then suddenly Jeff appears. He’s hurt, wearing the sling, but he’s there, talking to me. Then someone else walks into the room and only sees me talking to nobody—because Jeff is just a figment of my imagination. He’s my north star, my guiding light. That way Jeff stays on TV, adds some star power, and also gives me some depth—like I’m wishing he were there.’

Vince hated it. He was not a fan. He said, ‘He’s not there? It’s a vision?’

It was never an outright ‘no,’ but I could tell he just wasn’t into it. I thought Vince might bite on it, but it just wasn’t his cup of tea.”
