Gunther Officially Becomes the Longest Reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion Ever

On June 10th, 2022, Gunther defeated then WWE Intercontinental Champion Ricochet for the title on an episode of Smackdown. Since then, Gunther has never defeated by pinfall or submission when the title was on the line and officially through today, September 7th, 2023, he became the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. Including the day he won the title, Gunther has been IC Champion for 455 days today.

Prior to this IC Title reign for Gunther, the Honky Tonk Man held the record at 454 days as champion by defeating Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat on June 2nd, 1987 and never letting go of the title until the first ever SummerSlam Pay Per View held on August 28th, 1988 when he put over the Ultimate Warrior. Quite remarkable for this record to hold for 35 years and is definitely embarking on a WWE creative change recently to have lengthy title reigns. On his end, HTM has not released a statement but has been retweeting (or reposting) many fan appreciation notes of his famous reign.

Chief Content Officer, Triple H, tweeted the following about this milestone achievement: Defining his own legacy. And this is just the beginning…

Congratulations to @Gunther_AUT on making history as the longest-reigning #ICChampion EVER.
