Backstage news regarding Jon Moxley’s contract extension with AEW

As previously noted, AEW announced that World Champion Jon Moxley has signed a five-year contract extension with the company. In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com had additional details regarding Moxley’s new deal.

Moxley’s contract that was signed in May of 2019 was reportedly extended due to the time he had off while in rehab. The deal expired in mid-July of 2022 and was kept secretive but Moxley had verbally agreed to money terms. According to Meltzer, Moxley “could have probably gotten in excess of $4.5 million annually from WWE” but it’s believed that he wasn’t interested in returning to the company.

Meltzer noted that Moxley’s contract extension was signed prior to him winning the AEW world title tournament on September 21st. The original idea was apparently for Moxley to take time off after All Out and reveal that he signed a new contract during the October 18th edition of Dynamite in his hometown of Cincinnati, OH.

Dave Meltzer wrote the following about why the announcement was made sooner…

“One is that they wanted it out that he had signed the five-year deal prior to his dropping the GCW title to Nick Gage on 10/8 in Atlantic City. In addition, with AEW having negative news due to the situation with Sammy Guevara and Andrade, that day made sense to make what would come across as a positive announcement for the company.”
