Backstage news regarding Ilja Dragunov’s departure from WWE
On Thursday afternoon, it was reported that Ilja Dragunov is leaving WWE. Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted that Dragunov was seen by the company as a great worker, but not a “numbers mover.” Evidently, given the level of money he was asking for and receiving, WWE felt he needed to be someone who could move the numbers.
Meltzer had asked about Dragunov’s recent absence and the only answer he received was that Dragunov was not injured, but creative simply was not using him. One claim was that WWE had nothing for him, while another was that people were specifically told he was unavailable to be used.
Meltzer also stated the following…
“Essentially, he signed what was termed a very good contract and it was coming due. In talks over a new deal, the sides were far enough apart that the decision was made in April not to use him anymore. He would be free to wrestle anywhere at this point as there is no non-compete for a contract running out.”
