What the Warner Brothers Discovery/Paramount merger could possibly mean for AEW’s future
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com discussed the potential impact of the Warner Brothers Discovery/Paramount merger on AEW’s future, noting that the situation could have major implications but that the outcome remains uncertain. Meltzer stated the following…
“It’s obviously giant for AEW, but we don’t know if it’s giant good or giant bad, you know? I mean, that’s the reality.”
Meltzer said Tony Khan has been pushing for the merger and has spoken with David Ellison [CEO of Paramount Skydance], adding that Khan “feels very confident.” He said the deal could potentially open the door for AEW to appear on CBS, although he cautioned, “I wouldn’t count on it.”
Meltzer also discussed the possibility of Paramount acquiring AEW’s PPV rights for streaming by stating, “I think there’s a good chance of that.”
Meltzer compared it to Paramount’s UFC deal and said the planned HBO Max/Paramount+ merger could put AEW in more homes. Internationally, however, existing AEW broadcast agreements could prevent the promotion from streaming in certain countries.
Another potential concern is Ari Emanuel [TKO Executive chairman]’s close relationship with Ellison. Meltzer said, “Could he make it difficult for AEW? Yeah. Yeah, he could.” However, he noted that AEW remains one of TBS’ strongest shows and that Dynamite has recently performed extremely well in the ratings.
Meltzer also pointed to AEW’s recent PPV, television and streaming numbers…
“AEW’s in a strong position right now. Pay-per-views are doing the best that they’ve done in years, maybe the best ever. And the TV is doing the best numbers in a couple of years.”
Meltzer estimated that AEW is now likely exceeding one million viewers per week when Max streaming is included, although he remains skeptical of higher estimates.
Ultimately, Meltzer described the merger as “the wild card,” saying, “you just don’t know.”
