Triple H, Bruce Prichard, and Michael Hayes all wanted CM Punk to win at WWE WrestleMania 41
During the WWE Unreal series on Netflix, footage was shown of the WWE creative team discussing plans for Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins at WWE WrestleMania 41 less than two weeks before the show. When asked about what the finish should be, Michael Hayes responded with “Punk over.” Paul “Triple H” Levesque said “I’m of the opinion that Punk should go over at WrestleMania” and Bruce Prichard agreed with him.
Triple H proposed the idea of Punk winning despite the betrayal of Paul Heyman…
“Is [Paul] Heyman gonna f*ck Punk over? Like he is in his corner, but he’s still trying to do the shit for Roman. Punk should go over. And not only should Punk go over, but Heyman turns on him. Doesn’t work. Punk overcomes Paul, beats either Roman or Seth. Whatever he’s gotta do, right? Punk survives and not only survives, but thrives.”
Triple H then said the following…
“There’s always logical roads to go down to get the story where you want it to. And sometimes the logical road becomes predictable. If it becomes predictable, you need to pivot.”
Rollins ended up winning the match. WWE SVP of Creative Writing Ed Koskey explained the idea to have Rollins emerge victorious…
“Punk going over is great, but Heyman decides to go with Seth and ends up that way. Feels much more shocking of this whole time. Seth manipulated this whole deal. Seth going over just feels like a better story to me. Roman and Heyman have had such a run where they become so synonymous that breaking them apart at the main event of WrestleMania is like something that’s worthy of that.”
CM Punk was originally set to win the WrestleMania Night 1 Main Event vs Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins
There was even an idea to have Paul Heyman turn on Punk, and Punk still win. But the Seth Rollins surprise turn pitch won out.
