WWE Women’s Division Is BAD Television
WWE Women’s Division = BAD TV
By Christopher Connor
After watching Impact Slammiversary and then watching WWE RAW this past week, it’s clear as day that women’s wrestling in WWE is at a low point. Not the wrestler’s fault but the fact seems that Triple H/Vince McMahon either have no clue or don’t care. And considering the talent on the roster… this is the lowest point in the company for women’s wrestling.
That is right, worse than the Bra and Panties matches. Worse than Santina winning the Divas title. Worse than even Trish barking like a dog. At least you could argue either lack of talent or lack of knowing better on how to portray women.
You could at least even point to the ratings and just go “Sex sells.” The best thing was people at least cared and watched.
Now… its clear creative doesn’t care, and the fans are starting to stop caring.
Start off with the champions; Asuka has been portrayed as the 3rd wheel in her storyline at best and looks weak and lucky to retain her title. This was the Empress of Tomorrow who Triple H once declared a huge star. And now she looks closer to Gilberg than Goldberg.
Meanwhile Rhea Ripley is barely defending her title and when she does it’s been against Zelina Vega, Natalya for what feels like a series of Groundhog Day matches and Shotzi. She is more over right now for being a glorified bodyguard/manager for Dirty Dom than being a champion.
Meanwhile Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair all feel miscast in their roles and in staggering feuds. Trish Stratus’s return has been mired in mediocrity as a heel.
And don’t get me started on the women’s tag team titles that feel like a crackerjack box toy than the titles they were designed to be.
When you go back to the “Four Horsewomen” era, that was the top point of women’s wrestling in WWE. You had great matches and angles between all four women mixed in with Naomi, Alexa Bliss, Asuka and even Nia Jax (when she wasn’t injuring people.)
But now it seems that WWE creative has just forgotten about that and treats the women’s division as an afterthought. That is bad for the future as the last thing you want is for the crowd to view women’s wrestling the same way and just head for the snack lines.
Maybe its time to do some drastic things to focus on the talented women performers. Break Rhea away from Judgement Day and have her start feuding with Becky Lynch and Raquel Rodriguez. Turn Bianca Belair full heel and have her target Bayley (who the fans want to cheer.) Hell, pull the trigger on a heel Charlotte Flair vs. Trish Stratus in a changing of the guard match a la Hogan vs. The Rock.
Whatever you do, it’s time for the WWE to do something better because right now women’s wrestling feels like something worse than even the Bra and Panties matches.
Feels like an afterthought.
