Winter Is coming to Cardiff – By Wrestle G
Hello one and all and welcome back to the ramblings of Me, Wrestle G. Right here where wrestling column royalty resides.
I dropped a column yesterday about John Cena’s last match and Gunther being the final opponent and that I’m back ok with it. Thank you so much for the feedback from it so far, some really interesting stuff. Getting to debate these sorts of things is what is great about being part of the IWC.
So, keep those opinions coming and let’s keep the conversation flowing. It’s going to be quite an event in D.C this weekend. But I want to turn my attention today to the other major wrestling company who have their own interesting week ahead. AEW will be running shows in Cardiff and Manchester this week. And as Cardiff is my home city, of course yours truly will be going down to cover the Collision and ROH taping.
I’ve made no secret that I LOVE live wrestling. That feeling of the ring, the lights showing the dust slowly settling around the place. I just love the atmosphere, so I am very excited to get myself to the Utilita arena on Saturday evening. I also have tickets for the Rev Pro show which is taking place within walking distance of my living room. And what a card Rev Prop have for us; it’s currently looking like this:
What a card that is on top of the AEW event. I will be eating good as a wrestling fan this weekend.
So, let’s get stuck right in and have a look at what AEW has in store for us on Saturday:
AEW Collision: Winter Is coming
So, the card as it stands is:
Round 3 Continental Classic Matches
Continental Classic, Blue League: Claudio Castagnoli (2-0) vs. Konosuke Takeshita (2-0)
Jamie Hayter and Kris Statlander vs. The Sisters of Sin
TNT Championship: Mark Briscoe © vs. Daniel Garcia
Swerve Strickland vs. Josh Alexander
Firstly, I think the Continental Classic is a fantastic idea for AEW to put on at this time of year. It allows them to have focus for a number of different talents, add some stakes and give an excuse for some amazing matches. There could not be a greater example of this than this than Fletcher and Speedballs match from Dynamite this past week. That to me is what the Continental Classic is all about, and if Fletcher wasn’t already on track to be higher on the card he would make a worthy winner of the entire tournament.
Now let’s look at what Collision has in store for Cardiff this Saturday. Claudio and Takeshita are going head-to-head. It’s crazy for me to think that a CMLL and NJPW world champion are going to be facing off in Cardiff against each other. These guys on their day are two of the very best bells to bell, so I’m sure the Cardiff crowd will respond.
Elsewhere on the Card It will be nice for Jamie Hayter to get a home country pop. The whole feud with the Sisters of Sin has been bubbling quite nicely, it hasn’t had a tonne of focus but what it has had it seems like all the women are dialled in. I will guess they will be given time to put on a good match.
Briscoe vs Garcia is an interesting one. I feel like Briscoe needs a long title reign here. If you build Briscoe, then you have a really good talent to pivot in a whole host of situations going forward. Garcia getting back in the TNT mix will be good for him, and knowing the Arena in Cardiff as I do, I’m excited to see where they put the Death Riders entrance this week! but I don’t think it’s right for Garcia to win here. I wouldn’t be mad at a DQ finish here to protect both guys.
Swerve being on the card makes me so happy, I’ve written previous columns about him being a potential face of the company and since he’s returned, I feel he’s brought an air of star quality that has been missing in places on AEW television. I can’t see past a Swerve win here, but he’s a great person to have the crowd invested in what I assume will either be top of the hour match or the main event. The Utilita Arena in Cardiff will be Swerves house for an evening for sure.
All in all, I think Winter is coming shapes up well coming off of Dynamite on Wednesday. There will also be some ROH Global war matches taped, and I suspect some surprises and British talent to pop up on that show.
I will be covering the tapings, and the Rev Pro show all weekend, so please follow me on X via – @Wrestle_G and on TikTok via – @wrestleg I’ll be tagging in NoDQ.com all weekend long as well for them to pump out some of the clips. It’s going to be an amazing weekend of graps.
How you all feeling about it? Anyone going to the tapings? Let me know in the comments below.
Until Next time,
Cheers,
G
