WWE Hall of Famer JBL says wrestlers “are the biggest libertarians in the world”

While speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, WWE Hall of Famer JBL (John Layfield) was asked if people in the WWE locker room reacted negatively to Paul “Triple H” Levesque marrying Stephanie McMahon. Here was JBL’s response…

“No. People are pretty much, you know, wrestlers are ultimate libertarians. We don’t give a sh*t what people do — who they fall in love with or who they want to marry. You know, it was the boss’s daughter, but she was young too, and she was dating one of the boys. So, she’s dating one of the boys, and he’s dating the boss’s daughter. It’s not like one is crossing a line that the other isn’t. And we didn’t care. I don’t remember anybody thinking that this was something untoward, something that shouldn’t happen. She was young, he was young, they were both very smart people. Once they got together, it kind of seemed like a natural fit. I don’t remember anybody in the locker room saying, ‘Oh, what the hell is he doing?’ or ‘What’s she doing?’ or anything like that. It was just two people in love, and a bunch of the guys who really just wanted to get to the next town and see how late the bar stayed open.”

“We would joke, like, ‘You better not screw up!’ We’d joke about it, but it wasn’t like, ‘Hey, man, you’re doing this to make a political move.’ I don’t think anybody thought that. Maybe somebody did, I don’t know, but I don’t think anybody cared. Hunter didn’t care who we were marrying. I’m sure he just thought, ‘Hey, I hope you’re happy.’ We were hoping he was happy. He was a nice guy. Stephanie’s a nice lady. I think people just kind of thought, ‘We hope you’re happy.’ And people are going to say, ‘Oh, you’re just sticking up for WWE.’ No, I’m not. I’m telling you, wrestlers are the biggest libertarians in the world. We don’t care if people are white, black, brown, who they love, who they marry, or what their religion is. Wrestlers don’t care — they really don’t. There are a few bad apples out there who have different viewpoints, but for the most part, guys don’t care. We’re just worried about our own stuff and hoping everybody else gets along fine.”
