Vince McMahon reportedly attempted to “kill” the Netflix documentary about him by purchasing it

Netflix recently announced that a documentary series about former WWE owner Vince McMahon will be coming to the streaming service on September 25th 2024 with six one-hour episodes. On Monday, McMahon’s official Twitter/X issued a statement ahead of the docuseries’ premiere.

According to Matthew Belloni in his Puck newsletter, filmmaker Chris Smith was nearly finished with the documentary in 2022 prior to McMahon’s resignation. Belloni noted that McMahon “was still nervous about the doc, and after seeing early footage, he actually tried to buy the project back from Netflix, per two sources familiar.”

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com commented on the situation…

“He realized that this documentary was going to be different from what he imagined it to be… So he apparently tried, which I believe last year, he tried to buy the documentary. Basically, buy it to kill it, which a lot of media does. Or lot of rich people do with unfavorable media at times and Netflix turned him down. He tried to use Ari Emmanuel [CEO of Endeavor] to do the same and try and get the thing killed and that didn’t work, so here we are.” (quote courtesy of RingsideNews.com)
