Update on Chris Jericho’s AEW status amid renewed speculation about a potential WWE return

As seen during the February 16th 2026 edition of WWE RAW, a mystery crate appeared backstage with the message, “Do Not Open Until 2-28.” This has led to renewed internet speculation that Chris Jericho will make his WWE return at Elimination Chamber in Chicago, IL.

Jericho is reportedly still under contract with AEW, and his profile is still listed on AEW’s roster webpage as of February 17th. According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com, those close to Jericho and individuals within AEW believe his deal was frozen after he stepped away from television in 2025.

The report noted that contract freezes, time added for minor injuries, and short-term extensions have occurred before in AEW. In the past, talent such as Matt Hardy have reportedly seen their contracts extended by small increments.

Additionally, there has been no indication from AEW officials that Jericho has left the company. Direct inquiries to AEW did not result in the kind of confirmation that typically accompanies a performer’s departure.
