Seth Rollins says it was difficult for him to “break kayfabe” during WWE: Unreal

During an interview with Busted Open Radio, Seth Rollins gave his thoughts on being a focal point of WWE: Unreal‘s second season…

“You know, I have a really difficult relationship with the show in general. I’m younger, I’m under 40 still, but I still have kind of an old-school mentality. So for me to be pushed to the point of really having to break kayfabe, it hurts me a bit. And so it was difficult.

But I will say this—there are some things that I want to protect because I do believe that the gray area in our business is what makes things special. That believability. The nice thing about the Unreal show is that it airs after the fact, right? It’s not in real time like a live Monday, where we’re giving secrets away as they’re happening. We’re kind of peeling back the curtain a little bit on the back end of it. And so I feel a little bit better about that.

But yeah, there are some things that I still want to keep private, and I made that very clear with the producers. I’m like, ‘Look, there are going to be moments where I’m going to tell you to shut it down. And if you don’t respect that, then we’ll walk.’ And they were very cool about that.

And I think what they got—again, I haven’t seen it. They haven’t shown me too much. I’ve only seen the previews—but it does seem like they did a really good job of covering that story and showing all the things that go into our business. If you’re a new fan or a new viewer tuning into Netflix, I think there’s a deeper respect you’re going to get for our business, the performers, and the effort, time, and intelligence it takes to constantly tell stories.

We don’t have an eight-week season that we get to pre-plan. The season never ends. It never starts. The stories are continuous. It’s a different animal, and I think people will get a chance to see that and hopefully learn to respect what it is we do in a different way.”
