Report: What was planned for the WWE WrestleMania 42 main events prior to Seth Rollins getting injured

World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns is scheduled to be the main event of WWE WrestleMania 42. WWE Champion Drew McIntyre vs. Cody Rhodes, with Jacob Fatu potentially being added, is also expected to take place as the other headlining match.

According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, plans for the two main events were changed twice. Meltzer stated the following…

“The basic idea is the four biggest stars in the company were and are Reigns, Punk, Rhodes and Seth Rollins. So the plan was for Rollins to defend the world title against Reigns, a match they’ve avoided since Rollins won the three-way at last year’s WrestleMania and took Paul Heyman from Reigns. Rhodes would then defend the world title against Punk in a babyface vs. babyface match which the company has avoided doing but teased multiple times since Punk’s return.”

Meltzer noted that after Rollins suffered a shoulder injury, the idea was to have Reigns face Cody at WrestleMania, but WWE later decided to shake things up by having McIntyre defeat Cody for the WWE Championship.

Prior to the McIntyre victory, there was reportedly a plan to have Bron Breakker win the Royal Rumble and then defeat Punk at WrestleMania but WWE decided to book Reigns as the Rumble winner instead.
