Report on what actually led to unplanned title change during the December 16th 2025 edition of WWE NXT
As seen during the December 16th 2025 edition of WWE NXT, Thea Hail won the NXT Women’s North American Championship after defeating Blake Monroe. The botched finish led to an unplanned title change.
In an update on the story, Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted the following about what happened…
“Based on those we have spoken with, Monroe had the wind knocked out of her when Hail came off the ropes and tried to recover to get her shoulder up, but wasn’t able to do it in time. Since Hail is so young, we are told she likely didn’t realize she needed to give Blake a moment to catch her wind and went right for the pin. Since referees are instructed to call pinfalls as if they are legitimate, the referee had no choice but to count the three count. Monroe did try to get her shoulder up, which WWE later used as a storyline point.”
Johnson confirmed that the plan was for Monroe to retain her title. With WWE taping two episodes of NXT tonight, it remains to be seen whether Monroe will be booked to win back the championship.
