John Cena reveals what he originally wanted to do for his WWE retirement tour

While speaking to The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, John Cena commented on how his WWE retirement tour was impacted by outside acting projects…

“I was in Budapest, flying from Budapest—like, do an all-night shoot on set in Budapest, fly to Indy, do Indy, fly back, land, drop my stuff off, go film—and I was doing that until post-WrestleMania. Just back and forth to Morocco and Budapest and all these crazy places that weren’t easy commutes. And you think you can do it because you’re like, ‘I’ll sleep on the plane’ or whatever. You don’t. It doesn’t happen. Then you get upside down and you’re super fatigued. But I threaded the needle just enough.

The plan originally was to do a full year. This just goes to show my ignorance of the business. I wanted to do 220 dates—just take a year off everything, hop on a bus, do a full WWE calendar, and totally say goodbye. Thank goodness the business isn’t like that anymore, because I would be… if you took a gingerbread man and just broke him—that would be me. I’d be done. They only needed me for 36.”
