Backstage news regarding the Rey Mysterio vs. Santos Escobar storyline on WWE Smackdown

As previously noted Rey Mysterio had knee surgery following his angle with Santos Escobar on the November 10th 2023 edition of WWE Smackdown. Mysterio is reportedly still in Birmingham, Alabama while recovering from his procedure but is expected to be back in time for a potential Wrestlemania 40 match against Escobar.

In regards to the timing of the Escobar heel turn on Rey, Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted that Zelina Vega was praised by people within WWE for her performance and emotional work. Johnson also stated the following…

“We’ve had some readers ask if the Santos Escobar turn was something that happened because of the injury. We are told that it was always planned and had Rey not gotten hurt, they would gone right into live events doing Rey vs. Escobar.”
