Nick Aldis relinquishes his role as the WWE SmackDown general manager
The July 24th 2026 edition of WWE SmackDown opened with Adam Pearce joining Nick Aldis in the ring with a contract. Pearce explained that there were conditions attached to Aldis facing Gunther at SummerSlam. If Aldis signed the contract, he would relinquish his duties as SmackDown General Manager, with Pearce taking over those responsibilities. The contract also stated that WWE would not be held responsible for anything that happened during the match. Aldis accepted the terms and signed the contract.
After a heated verbal exchange, Gunther and Nick Aldis got into a brawl. Gunther gained the upper hand by delivering a low blow before powerbombing Aldis through the contract signing table.
Wade Barrett later noted on commentary that Aldis relinquishing his duties is only temporary for the match.
