The Odd Couple – MJF and Adam Cole
My friends that don’t watch wrestling always ask me what I find entertaining about the product or what keeps me coming back for more on a weekly basis. This week’s AEW Dynamite helped remind me what it is I love about Pro Wrestling. I’m talking specifically about the current MJF/Adam Cole storyline.
Now, there is nothing revolutionary about the odd couple tag team angle we are being presented with. Like everything else in wrestling, we’ve seen it before, and more than just a few times. It’s generally a fun area to explore for character development purposes, and can be an interesting vehicle for storyline progression.
Sometimes, these unlikely duos combine to create some of wrestling’s most memorable moments. The Rock N’ Sock Connection or Daniel Bryan & Kane come to mind. These were character driven storylines that were well crafted and often hilarious. It’s a simple formula, and if it’s done correctly, it can make for incredibly entertaining television.
It’s been awhile since we’ve seen this formula garner a reaction the likes of what we currently are getting with MJF and Adam Cole. The audience is fully invested in the shtick and loving every second of their banter.
Cole is playing the role of the skeptical and weary teammate to absolute perfection. He has always been a top tier performer when it comes to in-ring promos and backstage pretapes or vignettes, and this role is no exception.
This overly enthusiastic, cringe inducing, uber positive babyface role was made for MJF. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done this well before, and I certainly haven’t been this entertained by anyone else who has taken it on.
The inevitable turn is coming, this we know. But what is truly intriguing, is the fact that we arent convinced that it will be MJF doing the turning. A credit to Tony Khan and the powers that be for weaving this thread throughout their weekly shows. They have done a great job of making this storyline feel important.
To say I am intrigued by where this angle goes next would be an understatement. I am fully invested, nearly frothing at the mouth, yearning for more. We have two of the best overall performers in the business working together on a weekly basis, and they are absolutely killing it.
Wherever they go from here, it’s safe to say that the MJF/Adam Cole bromance is one of the best things in wrestling today.
