News regarding Cody Rhodes and the WWE world title picture had he not been injured
As previously noted, Cody Rhodes had surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. During the June 10th 2022 edition of WWE Smackdown, Michael Cole said that Rhodes could be out of action for up to nine months.
For months, there was internet speculation that Rhodes would have been pushed into a world title feud against the unified WWE champion Roman Reigns had he not been injured. However, Fightful Select spoke with “numerous sources in WWE who said that at the time that Cody Rhodes sustained his injury, Vince McMahon had not solidified plans to make Cody Rhodes the WWE or Universal Champion.” Furthermore, Mcmahon was said to have been “all on board” for Reigns being the unified champion and there were no ideas “floated from Vince that would have indicated he was ready to move on from that this summer.”
It doesn’t appear that Reigns’ creative direction has changed with Triple H in charge. Last month, it was reported that Reigns is expected to remain unified champion until at least Wrestlemania 39 in Southern California.
