In June of 2026, there was talk about “Road Dogg” Brian James potentially having a creative role with TNA Wrestling. However, James did not end up working with the company.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted the following in regards to what he heard…

“All signs were they were going to sign a deal and then it didn’t happen. No one I have asked has ever explained why. He went from being at Slammiversary and speaking to talents about wanting to bring them in to he himself not coming in. It’s always possible they could revisit down the line, but I haven’t heard anything about it, at all, of late.”

Former WWE creative team member “Road Dogg” Brian James got into a verbal exchange on Twitter/X with wrestling analyst Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com. It started when James praised Austin and Colten Gunn…

“Tag titles are beneath them at this point as is EVERY OTHER TEAM and I mean EVERY TEAM AEW @TonyKhan I heard you didn’t sleep…… you’re sleeping on these boys #OUDK #SUCKIT #Nothing2lose”

Meltzer responded to James…

“I will say this. For all the people who championed him coming to AEW, saying the tag titles are ‘beneath’ Austin & Colten Gunn shows an lack of understanding of AEW tag titles. They weren’t beneath Omega & Page, nor Christian & Copeland, nor FTR, nor Young Bucks. Saying tag titles are ‘beneath’ anyone is a fed brain issue. Ospreay has the trios titles in NJPW. Mistico has a tag title in AEW. Don’t even get me started on history like Funks or Stevens & Patterson.”

James then fired back at Meltzer…

A fan wrote to James, “Sir, if you really want a job in AEW you shouldn’t be publicly arguing with their executive vice president of Communications like this!!” James then stated the following to the fan…

Update regarding “Road Dogg” Brian James potentially having a creative role with TNA Wrestling

Last week, Tommy Dreamer announced that he is no longer working for TNA Wrestling. Dreamer had been working as part of TNA’s creative team.

According to PWInsider.com, WWE Hall of Famer “Road Dogg” Brian James is expected to be in attendance at TNA Slammiversary this Sunday. While the company has reportedly attempted to keep his involvement under wraps, there has been discussion internally about his arrival.

The report noted that James was initially considered for a producer role. However, following the departure of Dreamer, there is speculation that he could instead become involved with TNA’s creative team.

One source cited by PWInsider stated that James has a close relationship with NXT head writer Johnny Russo, and his potential involvement with TNA could further strengthen the working relationship between NXT and TNA.

On Tuesday, Tommy Dreamer announced that he is no longer working for TNA Wrestling. Dreamer had been working as part of TNA’s creative team.

Following the news that Dreamer is out of the company, Fightful Select heard from industry sources that “Road Dogg” Brian James has been discussed within TNA as a potential replacement for him. Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted that the company has been in contact with Road Dogg for weeks. However, it wasn’t known that he would replace Dreamer, only to join Dreamer on the creative team.

Hunter Johnston aka Delirious will remain with TNA. Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com stated the following…

“The belief among those we’ve spoken with is that currently, Delirious will head up TNA Creative. There’s always a chance there are more names brought onto the team with the departure of Tommy Dreamer, but we are told Delirious is the point person moving forward.”

With Tommy Dreamer departing TNA, @FightfulSelect heard from industry sources that Road Dogg had been discussed within TNA as a potential replacement for him.

While speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL (John Layfield) commented on the reaction to “Road Dogg” Brian James’ time as part of the SmackDown creative team, as well as clips of Road Dogg that circulated following his appearance on WWE Unreal…

“Smart guys think out loud sometimes. Smart guys think with their voice and allow you inside their brain. What I saw with that clip was that Road Dogg was thinking out loud.

He would say, ‘I don’t like this.’ Well, what do you think? ‘I don’t know.’ He hadn’t gotten there yet. I’ve seen guys do this a lot.

And these guys out there talking about Road Dogg didn’t do a good job, man, f*ck you. It’s just bullsh*t, you know.

These guys are selling out arenas all over the world and making more money than we ever dreamed people would make. And Road Dogg was one of the guys behind it.

Look, I can tell you all the things that Vince [McMahon] failed with. I can also tell you that Vince bought a company from his father for a million dollars and sold it for $9.3 billion while somehow retaining control. That’s Game of Thrones sh*t, Conrad.

But do you fail a lot?

Absolutely.

When you’ve got 52 weeks a year live with no reruns, do you think you’re going to make some mistakes? I would hope so, because if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying.

In March of 2026, it was reported that “Road Dogg” Brian James left his creative team position with WWE. Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted that James “expressed his unhappiness and tendered his resignation.”

While speaking to Busted Open Radio, Road Dogg commented on his decision to leave WWE…

“I still love wrestling, and I want to do wrestling. I want to do it for somebody that wants it and needs it.

And I feel like WWE didn’t want it or need it anymore. You know what I mean? They were firing on all cylinders and making money and setting records and breaking them.

It was complacent. I felt like I wasn’t earning it. I was getting a check, but I felt like I wasn’t earning it. And I wasn’t having any fun either.

It got to be so much work that it stopped being fun.

I told myself a long time ago—I actually stayed longer than I wanted to just out of fear of unemployment and fear of, ‘Oh God, what do I do now?’ I didn’t do well with my money. I’m a drug addict and recovering alcoholic. I didn’t manage my money well.

So, that fear of the unknown kept me there for a long time.

And my wife told me on the phone—I was about to go into a meeting—and she said, ‘I’ll live with you in a tent.’

And I said, ‘I’m coming home right now.’

Because if you’ll live with me in a tent, then I don’t need to pay the mortgage.

You know what? We keep it. We keep the lights on at The James Gang Ranch. I assure you of that.

But what—hey, I’m rambling, man. I’m using this as therapy.”

Road Dogg later stated the following…

“I think the booking used to be about wrestling, and I think the booking’s maybe always been about the money, and I just forgot. I just thought it was about the wrestling.

But it feels like it’s just all about the money now.

So maybe that goes to what you’re saying—the money. They can go over there and make some money too, so the money’s deciding everything.

But I don’t know, man. It just feels like WWE right now, for me, was a money grab. And I don’t know, it didn’t feel right.

I wanted to step away from that.”

“Did any of you watch [Unreal]? I know you’re not a fan of the show. I’m old, so I’m not a fan of it either. It’s a little behind the scenes. I don’t need to tell you what happened. I feel like if you watch that show, you saw what happened. And, and so here I sit with you tonight, and I’m happy, man, because of it. I have friends there that are still gonna be there.

I have gripes. I do have gripes, but in saying that, it even sounds sh*tty to say, like, ‘oh, you’re just gonna gripe about some stuff then?’ Like, why? What? Some of the people there are still my friends.

I feel like I was done a little wrong, and I feel like I was receiving a paycheck and I didn’t have any purpose. I was making a dollar, but I wasn’t making any decisions. I was, you know what I mean? I think I can make a difference somewhere where maybe I don’t make as many dollars. And that, in this phase of my life, that’s what I’m thinking about.”

“As an old-timer, I think we always feel that way [that it exposes the business too much]. But look, if there’s an idea behind it, in my opinion, it’s an on-ramp or an exit ramp into the actual episodic television show. And I don’t know if there’s a metric that can tell you whether that works or not.”

On Thursday, it was reported that “Road Dogg” Brian James is no longer working for WWE’s creative team. Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted that James “expressed his unhappiness and tendered his resignation.”

Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com provided additional details about James’ departure…

“James got his annual review. The belief is that he wasn’t happy with it and left. He may say he left over something else and only he would know exactly why he did so. But it was his decision and it came after his annual review. One person close to the situation said that it has been brewing.”

James leaving WWE is said to be unrelated to Alexandra Williams being promoted to Vice President/Lead Writer for WWE RAW despite both stories breaking on the same day.
