It was reported in early 2026 that former WCW star Konnan, a Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide Hall of Famer, was hospitalized and had his leg amputated. While speaking on the Coach and Bro podcast, former WWE writer Vince Russo shared an update on Konnan…

“I’ve known Konnan forever, and man, he had my back in WCW in 1999. I’ll never forget that.

Konnan has gone through a double-leg amputation. Both legs. I was aware that he had one leg amputated, and the second one was still in question the last time I talked to him, probably about two months ago. They ended up having to remove the second one.

So I called Konnan yesterday. I didn’t talk to him long because he’s very weak right now. He’s going through grueling rehabilitation and learning how to cope with everything. I can’t even imagine that. He sounded exhausted, so I told him, ‘Brother, go relax, man. We’re praying for you. We love you.’

But I do want to point this out: Konnan told me that WWE has paid every single cent of his medical bills. That’s got to be pointed out, and that’s got to be said, because I can’t imagine what Konnan is going through.

First of all, who could imagine losing a limb, let alone two limbs? Then going through rehabilitation—he was in rehabilitation for six months. And on top of that, if he had to worry about how he was going to pay for all of this?

He told me, ‘The WWE have paid every penny, and I was only working with them for a short time.'”

Reports from Mexico over the past several days have indicated that former WCW star Konnan, a Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide Hall of Famer, was hospitalized and had his leg amputated. Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com noted that “there has been no official announcement and Konnan has not commented on the reports but the general belief within the pro wrestling industry is that the report is accurate.”

The original statement from elplancitas on Twitter/X stated, “I can confirm that Carlos Santiago Espada (62 years old) had a leg amputated. For some time now, the Triple A star has been dealing with health problems that have left him in a delicate state in San Diego, United States.”

Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com stated the following about what he has heard…

“He’s been in rough shape for a while now, probably since the last time he was on AAA television, so it’s probably been six weeks. I don’t know all of the details. I believe that he will be probably addressing it soon. He’s been in and out of the hospital, mostly in, that much I know. That’s about it, really.”

Konnan has faced several health issues over the years, including a kidney transplant in 2007. In 2022, he underwent dialysis due to kidney complications stemming from a Covid-19 diagnosis in 2021.

Despite these challenges, Konnan has stayed active in the wrestling world through his podcast and his work with AAA, where he has also served as a commentator.

During the WWE WrestleMania 41 Countdown Show, WWE announced its acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA. Former WWE/WCW star Konnan, who has worked with AAA for years, commented on the news during his podcast…

“Here’s the thing that I’ve been telling people but of course the fans are so passionate, and some of them are just to fanatical. Our problem in AAA isn’t our talent. It’s not our booking. It’s that we didn’t have any money. So, for example, they said in WWE that if you (AAA) put all our TVs together for one year, it’s not as much as they (WWE) spend on one TV in the United States. We’re working with WWE. It doesn’t get any better than that, and so our show will look a lot better, and we’re going to be be able to work with their talent, and now with money, you’ll see what we can fu**ing do.”

The reason they sold the company is because Dorian Roldan [long-time key executive in AAA] put his ego to the side, and he understood we could never grow if we didn’t have help and capital, and now we have it, but business was not bad. I’ve said this a million fu**ing times that if business was bad, and this is very well documented, okay, the last two years, all of our TVs have been from 85% to full.” (quotes courtesy of WrestlingNews.co)

Konnan added that he will be having a role with the creative team moving forward.

Former WCW star Konnan has dealt with various health issues over the years. In 2022, it was reported by Twitter account @LuchaBlog that Konnan underwent heart surgery due to the effects of Covid-19.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted the following about Konnan’s health…

“Konnan has been hospitalized at this point for the last 26 days, after getting diverticulitis and then having other health issues stemming from it. He is hopeful to be home this weekend for the first time. I suspect he’ll go through it in detail when he’s able to do his podcast but the situation was very grave at one point, but he was able to make a turnaround that actually surprised doctors who feared the worst.”

During his podcast, AAA’s Konnan talked about his professional issues with AEW President Tony Khan. Konnan brought up how Khan pulled Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo from AAA Nocho de Campeones in late 2022 after another wrestler on the AEW roster got Covid-19 and Khan wanted Tay as a replacement. Konnan said the following…

“Tony got really, really mad about this and I can’t even believe he got mad. I was thinking to myself, you’ve got so many girls but you’re going to use her.. okay. And then I said on the podcast, I go ‘some chick got (COVID)’ because I’m pretty sure he didn’t want me to say the name. And when he saw me, he goes, ‘What do you mean some chick?’ Like, oh give me a break, dude. So, would you rather have had me say the name?’ It’s not being disrespectful. If you say ‘chick’ I think they know what you mean. ‘Hey, that’s a hot chick,’ is that disrespectful?”

“We’ve been selling out everywhere. We don’t even need AEW, and they’re expensive and it’s hard to deal with them because they pull ’em out at the last minute. I see they haven’t had that problem with Arena Mexico. Whether he’s trying to stick it up… because I don’t put over his thing or he’s just having a good business relationship and it’s easier to work with them, I have no idea.”

“I’m going to be very vague with what I’m about to tell you and remember I said it today and very soon you’ll find out what I’m talking about, what comes around goes around. And when it happens, you’re going to go, ‘Okay, now I see what you’re talking about.’ So, have your little fun while you can.” (quotes courtesy of F4WOnline.com)

Konnan later wrote the following on Twitter/X…

“its funny dat a ? I answered on my podcast is being questioned by da AEW fanboys..I get it Tony can do no wrong & I can do no right in there eyes.

During an appearance on Busted Open Radio, former WCW star Konnan gave his thoughts on who was responsible for the decline of WCW…

“I never thought it was Hulk Hogan. I always thought it was [Scott] Hall and [Kevin] Nash. As a matter of fact, I said Eric [Bischoff] hitched his wagon to Hogan instead of the other guys ’cause they were the ones coming up with the cool ideas. They were the cool factor. He’s [Hogan] the one that said, ‘Bro, I’m getting booed. I’ve got to do something to resurrect my career.’ Kevin Sullivan and Eric were the ones that convinced him [to turn heel]. They had to sequester him to make sure he didn’t change his mind or somebody got in his ear, whatever was going on.”

“To me, when they fired X-Pac — ’cause I was there, I was friends with them — and they were sitting in the arena, and they were hot as a motherfu**er. They had shirts on, like button-down shirts, and they opened up their shirts and they had WWE shirts. They were willing to go up in the fu**ing ring, open up their shirts show WWE, and support X-Pac. When Eric fired X-Pac, they took their ball and went home — meaning, they were not giving any more ideas, they weren’t coming in on time, they weren’t playing anymore, and just the jealousy and everybody cutting each other’s throats. And Hogan always looking up for himself, that was part of the reason.” (quotes courtesy of WrestlingInc.com)

“What’s the majority of their [Cole and MJF] fans — nerds, geeks, not disparaging, not demeaning, it is what it is, right? That gets over with that fanbase, the trampoline-jumping, and the best friend s***t and all that, they are eating that up. MJF has decided, because I’m sure MJF writes his own s**t, I can not see Tony [Khan] writing this, well I kind of can, but I’m sure that MJF writes his own s**t and Cole is there participating because they know it’ll get over with their fans. What happened when they got in the ring?

During his podcast, Konnan commented on his appearance at the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony when he gave his induction speech for Rey Mysterio…

“I had written my speech like three days before because I was really, really busy. The way I work is I can talk right off the top of my head, because that’s what we do on the podcast, but when I do a promo, usually I’ve gone over it in my head a couple of times. I like to memorize it so I can own it because that’s something that I learned from actors, that when you memorize your lines, you’re not thinking about them so you can do other stuff and you’re not just like, trying to remember the lines and you’re kinda like one dimensional.”

“They actually gave me a speech writer, and I want to shout out this guy, Brian Yang. He was fu**ing incredible. He was very professional. He was very accommodating. I had written out three days before what I wanted to say. They were like, ‘Oh, we need to see whatever it is you’re gonna say’. I had like a seven minute thing, and they were like, ‘Oh, you only have three minutes’, and I go, ‘Bro, there’s no way I can properly represent this fu**ing legend in three fu**ing minutes.’ So the guy goes, ‘Well, let me see if I can get you five’, and I was thinking to myself, ‘Alright, give me five because I’m gonna take seven.’ Here’s my thing. If I was gonna get heat, I get heat. I don’t give a sh*t. I’m gonna properly introduce my boy.” (quotes courtesy of WrestlingNews.co)

It previously noted, it was confirmed during the March 10th 2023 edition of WWE Smackdown that Rey Mysterio will be inducted into the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame class. A report came out that Konnan will be inducting Mysterio and during an interview with MuscleManMalcolm, Konnan discussed the matter…

“Well, I would be very disappointed if it wasn’t me (inducting Rey Mysterio into the WWE Hall of Fame). But, Rey has asked me and so we’re still negotiating and until they put it out there, till they officially announce it, I really can’t say anything on it. But I have been contacted.”

Konnan also said the following about Rey vs. his son Dominik…

“I would put Dominik (Mysterio) over (at WrestleMania 39 if he faces Rey). Rey’s already over. That would get mega heat.” (quotes courtesy of PostWrestling.com)

It previously noted, it was confirmed during the March 10th 2023 edition of WWE Smackdown that Rey Mysterio will be inducted into the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame class. In an update on who will induct Rey, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com tweeted the following…

“Konnan will be inducting Rey into the Hall of Fame. Rey asked for him and the company approved it. As noted last night, to me it was the only choice.”

Rey and Konnan’s friendship goes back to the start of Rey’s wrestling career and the two were paired together in WCW. In 2018, Rey said the following to Bill Apter about how Konnan helped him…

“It doesn’t matter how good you are at what you do, sometimes if you don’t have the right person with that right connection to open up doors for you, it’ll be hard for you to succeed, and Konnan, what he did, I owe him my life for opening doors for me.”
