In April of 2024, it was reported that Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson was among a list of WWE cuts. While speaking to Joe Rogan, Steveson explained why things didn’t work out…

“Honestly, I had a great experience. I have nothing wrong with anybody there. TKO was great. Triple H, Paul Levesque, was great. Stephanie, Vince—everybody was great.

I just had a competitive drive that I needed to get out. And when you have that gap, you can’t do both. I was trying to bridge both, and I wasn’t giving my 100% to the business. And if I’m not going to give 100% to the business, then you might as well X me out because it’s already over with. So that’s practically how it happened.

I would love to go back in the future. I would love to do a sport and go out there and dominate, I would love to go back. And if it meant well, I would do it again most definitely, because I have no hard feelings toward them.”

While appearing at a press conference for the University of Minnesota, Steveson commented on why his run didn’t work out…

“I think WWE just wasn’t the right time. I had a lot of competitive edge to me, and they knew that. It was just not the time for it, and so maybe one day if the stars align, it’ll be a great opportunity to do it again. I have no bad feelings with it, I have no bad blood with it, and I would like to keep moving forward with everything.”

Steveson also commented on his brief NFL stint with the Buffalo Bills…

“I got a few tackles and a couple of games and a few QB hits. I had a few other teams reach out to me previously before coming back here, so maybe after the season, it’s another opportunity.” (quotes courtesy of SEScoops.com)

While speaking on his podcast, WWE personality Booker T gave his thoughts on Steveson’s release from WWE…

“As far as the build-up, you could see that, with what people were expecting to see from Gable Steveson. Just because he had the look, he had everything you check off as far as the box goes, he had all of that. For it not to pan out, I think it was him not really buying all in, not really saying, ‘Man, I’m really gonna throw everything into doing this and being the best at it.’ He had one foot in the door and one foot out, let’s just say that. I think that’s what it was more than anything.

Could he have cut it and really pulled this thing off? Probably. But I think that wrestling bug was still in his system, and it was hard for him to really get it out. It seemed like he still had something to prove. There again, just having one foot in and one foot out, I think that was his problem.” (quote courtesy of Colin Tessier)

On Wednesday, Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour read a statement that he received from Steveson’s manager Dave Martin…

“Gable Steveson is very grateful for the opportunities he had with WWE and would like to thank everybody in the organization who helped him get there. He would also like to thank the fans who supported him on his professional wrestling journey. Now, Gable is ready to resume competing against elite level competition and looks forward to sharing big news with you all very soon.”

“Multiple NFL teams have reached out to Gable Steveson. He has also been training at Kill Cliff FC with Henri Hooft and Robbie Lawler.

According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson was among the list of WWE cuts from the past week. Meltzer noted the following about Steveson’s release…

“The early word was that he wasn’t adapting to pro wrestling as well as hoped, while his brother Bobby (Damon Kemp), the Kasper Brothers (The Creeds), and Bronson Rechsteiner (Bron Breakker) were believed to be the stronger prospects as far as making the transition from real sports to WWE.”

In regards to a potential AEW run, Meltzer noted that it’s hard to say but Steveson wouldn’t have been cut from WWE if the company thought he still had potential.

Steveson had several WWE dark matches in early 2024. During an appearance on the JAXXON PODCAST earlier this month, Steveson claimed that the matches were “going really well.”

Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson, who had several WWE dark matches in early 2024, appeared on the JAXXON PODCAST and addressed his status with the company…

“I think there’s a great opportunity to do a lot of great things, but right now, I’m loving the WWE process, everything is going really good. SmackDown, the dark matches are going really well. I’m getting better every time, so I’m focused on one thing at a time, but, obviously, at the end of the day, competitiveness is always gonna be there, and there’s always the what if you can? But where I am right now with the business is really good, and I’m happy where I am. It’s for you to experiment because it’s not on live TV. So, right now, I’m trying to find out who Gable is. I know who I am in Olympic-style wrestling. I know who I am in Folkstyle wrestling. But, in entertainment, who am I? I know who I am personally. I’m outgoing, I’m funny, I’m nice, I’m humble, but sometimes, you gotta be that cocky, and this side, I can be that, and I can be whatever I wanna be with my life… I was thinking of the new Brock [Lesnar].”

“Right now, I’ve been doing heel. So I kind of do a mixture of both (babyface & heel). Honestly, right now, I’m really nothing because I haven’t really been given anything to be. I’m experimenting.” (quotes courtesy of WrestlingNews.co)

Prior to the January 5th 2024 edition of WWE Smackdown, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson defeated Cedric Alexander in a dark match. According to PWInsider.com, Steveson is booked for the next few Smackdown events but he is not currently in the creative mix for the 2024 men’s Royal Rumble match.

In a video published to the University of Minnesota Gophers’ Twitter/X account, coach Brandon Eggum provided an update on Steveson…

“Quick update on Gable Steveson. Unfortunately, he will not be able to compete for us this season. He is a great competitor. He’s always wanted to compete for the University of Minnesota. But ultimately, the WWE would prefer that he’s solely focused on his professional wrestling career at this time. So whenever he’s not at the WWE Performance Center down in Florida, he’s up here in our realm working with our heavyweights which is awesome. We just can’t thank him enough for the impact he’s had on our program. We’ve loved following him and watching him compete on the mat, he’s amazing and now we’re excited to watch him in his WWE career so, thank you Gable Steveson from our program and from all the Gopher fans across the country and the world and we look forward to watching you in your career here moving forward.” (quote courtesy of PostWrestling.com)

Last week, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson withdrew from competing in the 2023 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. It was also reported by Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com that Steveson was “officially removed” from the WWE NXT roster and “there are no plans for him in NXT at this moment.”

Steveson ended up wrestling at NXT live events over the weekend. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer discussed the situation with Steveson…

“He worked two shows this weekend. That was coming off from Wednesday when he pulled out of the World Championships. It’s weird because originally, they had him pegged as the next Brock Lesnar. Obviously, that has to be re-evaluated. He got a great deal coming off of winning the Gold Medal, as he was expected to be the next Brock Lesnar. But, you know, he was gonna debut on the main roster in a big way, and now he’s wrestling Dante Chin in Sebring, Florida, in front of 200 people to get ready. His trajectory has changed greatly, but he is there and not trying for Belgrade. I don’t know if he’s going to be back on TV soon. I know a week ago, they had no plans for him. A lot depends on… his situation will depend on Vince [McMahon]. Until Vince comes back, I don’t know if we’re gonna know a lot that’s going to happen with him because his situation is going to be a Vince decision, and if Vince isn’t back, then Triple H is in charge and everything like that, but it’s the big picture. He’s got an uphill climb right now.” (quote courtesy of WrestlingNews.co)

During his podcast, Kurt Angle commented on the fan backlash towards Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson in WWE so far…

“Well I feel badly for him, because he’s been compared to me at this point in time. And he hasn’t even barely started. He just started right now. So I don’t know how his future is going to be. I know he’s talented, really athletic. I’m not sure how he is as far as entertainment-wise. But as far in the ring, I heard he’s really good. But no, I don’t think comparing him to me is a fair assessment to compare him to me right now. I think down the line, you can do that.

“But I heard — this is crazy, but people have been coming to me and telling me, ‘Hey, he wrestled Baron Corbin in NXT, and the fans were booing the heck out of him. And then he pulled his straps down, and the fans were even more pissed.’ And you know what? That is something that the WWE is actually doing. They understand, they want to make him a heel, so they will have him copy and mimic me. This is what I believe. I think they’re going to have him copy and mimic me so he can piss the fans off so that he starts as a heel, because it’s easier to be a heel starting than it is to be a babyface. They’re ones that actually told him to do this stuff. I really believe that, and I think the WWE is brilliant for doing it.” (quotes courtesy of 411Mania.com)
