NoDQ.com > WWE > WWE in New Brunswick: DiBiase Jr. debuts
Posted by Bobby Spade on 05/04/2008 at 01:10 PM

Report by Eric Lewis and PWInsider.com:

WWE came back to Moncton, New Brunswick Canada last night for the first time in four years when the Smackdown and ECW brands performed here at the Moncton Coliseum. The crowd was far bigger than what I remember four years ago. It wasn't sold out by any stretch, but I would say 2,500 people were probably there. In 2004, attendance was awful.

When the show started, announcer Justin Roberts told the audience that they could decide what kind of match Batista and Edge would have in the main event, either a Falls-Count-Anywhere match, No-DQ match or a 2-out-of-3 falls match. We had to text message our votes in. I knew what the result would be anyway, but I voted 2-out-of-3 falls. Of course, no-DQ won.

- In the opening match, US champ Matt Hardy defeated MVP. It was an OK match, but nothing spectacular.

- Kofi Kingston defeated Matt Striker in what a more fast-paced match, with Kingston pulling out some cool high-flying kind of spots that the crowd enjoyed.

- WWE tag team champs John Morrison and The Miz defeated Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore in a fun match.

- Next, there was a divas body contest between Cherry, Kelly Kelly, Maryse (who was born in northern New Brunswick), Natalya Neidhart and Lena. Kelly Kelly won, though I'd say her and Maryse got nearly the same reaction.

- Kenny Dykstra defeated Ted Dibiase Jr. (who came out to his father's old theme music) in a decent match. Dibiase Jr. slipped the million dollar dream onto Dykstra twice in the match. The second time he did it, Dykstra kicked off the top turnbuckle and fell back on Dibiase Jr., pinning him (it was similar to the Roddy Piper-Bret Hart finish from Wrestlemania VIII, which was cool to see).

- Next, Jamie Noble and Finlay (w/Hornswoggle) defeated the Edgeheads, Hawkins and Ryder. It was a solid match. Looked like one of the Edgeheads hit his head pretty hard on the mats outside the ring at once point. Finlay hit one of them with the shaleleigh (sp?) to get the win. Hornswoggle wound up in the ring at one point, surrounded. He distracted the Edgeheads by juggling, which got a big pop. After the match, Finlay, Horny and Noble did the little Irish dance thing.

- Next, Mike Knox was to fight CM Punk, but Armando Estrada came out and made the match a three-way, including Chuck Palumbo who came out to a solid pop on his motorcycle. Fans seemed behind Palumbo and Punk. Punk eventually won, hitting Knox with the go-to-sleep. It was a little sloppy, but I can't imagine hitting a big dude like that with the move is easy.

- Kane and Big Show (who so far, got the biggest pops of the night) defeated Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely in a fun match. Chavo stalled and stalled, and was yelling back and forth with some guy in the crowd and a really mouthy older woman. Kane and Big Show were laughing a bit until Kane finally pulled Guerrero into the match. When Show finally came in, the crowd roared. The pinned Guerrero and Neely after giving them each a chokeslam.

- Finally, Batista defeated Edge in a No-DQ match when he tripped Edge and he slammed his face into the ring steps (which were in the ring), then gave him a spinebuster. The Edgeheads tried to interfere to no avail. After Batista won, he sold an arm injury quite well. During the match, he'd been thrown into the steps and also the ringpost. Edge stalled for an easy 10-15 minutes before finally getting into the ring. He was the first and only performer to cut a promo on the crowd, making fun of the city, saying he'd lived there for a few months (which could be true as I think Edge and Christian both lived here at one point) and saying the city sucked. Spotting a guy in a Montreal Canadiens jersey (I think), he said the team would lose that night and be out of the playoffs, which they did.

Anyways, a really fun night. Big Show, Kane, Batista and Edge got the biggest pops. Edge's heel antics were just eaten up. He's fantastic. There was a young girl in the front row with a sign that said, "My jaw is broken. Please hug me". A few of the guys over the course of the night hugged her. When Big Show did, the girl disappeared from view.

Later, I spotted several of the guys at a restaurant - CM Punk, the Edgeheads, Hornswoggle, Chavo, Palumbo, Knox, Dykstra and Estrada. We wanted to just quickly thank them for a great show, but when we saw a few people do it and ask for photos, one table of guys didn't look too impressed, so we just left them alone.
