NoDQ.com > UFC > Randy Couture dropping to light heavyweight?
Posted by Randy Gordon on 09/09/2009 at 03:02 AM

Thanks to FightLine.com for the following:

Coming off of consecutive losses, Randy “the Natural” Couture (16-10) is considering a move to light heavyweight. Couture's latest loss came at the hands of Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (32-5-1) in a fight controlled by the Brazilian. Nogueira nearly stopped Couture with a choke that appeared pretty deep and had dominant position throughout the fight. Nogueria weighed in at 231 pounds compared to Couture at 220. Couture was at a considerable size disadvantage against Brock Lesnar in his November fight for the UFC's heavyweight title. Lesnar normally cuts twenty pounds to make the 265 pound limit in the heavyweight division.

Couture has expressed an interest in fighting light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. With one or two quality wins at 205, the UFC might make this fight as Couture is one of the biggest names in the UFC and could present a compelling matchup with the champion. Couture's style of mixing a strong dirty boxing game with ground and pound is probably better suited for the 205 pound division where he wouldn't be at such a size disadvantage. Couture has enjoyed success at light heavyweight earlier in his career. He captured the undisputed light heavyweight title by defeating Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz in 2003.

“Maybe this year, or maybe the first of next year,” Couture told Loretta Hunt of Sherdog. “I haven’t really looked at the cards and the shows that they have. What’s on the schedule, I don’t know, but I’m especially leaning towards dropping down. I’m pushing in weight. It would be easy for me to make 205 and there’s more interesting fights there right now.”

Dana White appears to be on board with Randy's decision to move down a weight class. “I’d love to see him at light heavyweight, but he proved he can hang with heavyweights,” White admitted at the UFC 102 post-fight press conference. “He’s had probably the best fight against Brock Lesnar, other than Heath Herring, since Lesnar’s been in here. I think he’s a monster at light heavyweight. It’s up to him, to be honest with you. Whatever he wants to do, I’m in.”
